
DOMINION RD THE MUSICAL – THE REMIX
Dominion Rd The Musical – The Remix is a rare cultural clash of sounds yet to be experienced in Tāmaki Makaurau. Representing a cross section of Auckland’s aka Dominion Rd’s diverse culture, the 9-piece band will feature a number of cultural and traditional instruments. This includes taonga pūoro (Māori traditional instruments), African percussion and Indian sitar, along with Chinese erhu/violin, to complement the traditional western instrumentation. Led by musical director Jerome Kavanagh, an internationally renowned taonga pūoro artist, The Remix will comprise Jun Bin Lee (composer who will play the keyboards/bass/electric drums), Mabingo Alfdaniels (African percussionist), Indian sitar player Sargam Madhur and Chinese erhu violinist Anita Kang. The band will back singers Marissa Holder, Brady Peeti and Mustaq Missouri who sang the three original songs from Dominion Rd The Musical (2017) i.e. Mōrena, No Time For This and Diversity.

Jun Bin Lee, Malaysian Chinese who moved to New Zealand 12 years ago, is a musician, composer, short film director, and an engineer. He founded Performing Arts Workshop (now known as Ai Studio), which has produced a number of original musicals within the Asian migrant community. These include “Ai” the Musical (2013 & 2015) and How She Flew To The Moon (2012), as well as four Brighter Future musicals. His works are mostly in English and Mandarin, but has also produced works in Malay, Hindi and French. His most recent production which he directed and wrote was Prodigal Son, The Musical which was presented as part of the 2017 Auckland Fringe Festival at The Spreading Tree, a creative space in Mt Eden.
Jun Bin has composed and directed “Ai the musical”, a romantic comedy musical loosely based on his own relationship. The musical was presented at Auckland Fringe Festival 2013, and has won second runner up for “People choice award”. This piece was reproduced in Musgrove Studio at Auckland University in 2015.
He has also written and composed 10 minute musicals – “The Adventure of Kazu and Kengo” and “Karaoke Heaven”, both won “People choice awards” at Short and Sweet Song Festival in 2013 and 2014. Jun Bin’s musical short film “The Tour” about a group of Asian tourists in Rotorua, has won “People Choice Award” & “Highly recommended Award” at the Rotorua’s Creation Festival short film competition. JEROME KAVANAGH

Grammy award winning featured soloist and Maori musical instrument specialist Jerome Kavanagh (Poutama) hails from the Mokai Patea, Maniapoto, Kahungunu tribes (Maori) and the Caomhanach clan (Irish). He was first introduced to the sound of Taonga Puoro at aged 16 by one of his aunties. A family owned Koauau (Maori cross blown flute) was the first instrument he recalls learning to play.
Maintaining his strong roots, Jerome has become part of a movement introducing Maori music, art and culture to the world. Over his career he has performed/recorded with artists from a variety of different genres which range from Hip Hop to Classical. His collaborations include The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (U.K) Moana and the Tribe (N.Z) Daniel Beddingfeild, Hayley Westenra, Joler Gaan (Bangladesh), Kevin Mark Trail “The Streets” (U.K) and two times Grammy award winning composer Christopher Tin (U.S.A).
Jerome joins only a handful of New Zealand musicians as a featured solo artist and lyricist on two time Grammy award winning album “Calling All Dawns” 2011 in “Kia Hora te Marino”(May peace be widespread) recorded at Abbey Road studios, London.
More recently he performed at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall and The Lincoln Center alongside Distinguished Concerts New York International orchestra, Sydney Opera house with his band HuiA, The British Museum, Te Papa Tongarewa National Museum, Guest artist at Pasifika festival 2016 and was also a selected member of the New Zealand Art Delegation at the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts in the Solomon Islands. This year Jerome toured India and Bangladesh sharing his Oro Atua Taonga Puoro sound bath experience and live performances with as a guest artist with the legendary Bangladesh band Joler Gaan.
Alongside his musical career, Jerome is one of New Zealand’s most prolific Taonga Puoro workshop leaders and Guest Speakers. At present he travels sharing his interactive , live show “Power to the Puoro” to thousands of children in Aotearoa, New Zealand along with, universities, museums, colleges, Indigenous communities and sound healing events worldwide.

Fiona was born in Malaysia, but has lived in New Zealand since she was 16. It was in New Zealand that she discovered her love for music, and has since been involved with various musical productions in the local scene as a music director, as well as written several original musicals. Having grown up part of her life in Malaysia, she is well versed in Malay and English. Fiona has music directed several shows in Auckland: Ruthless (Dolphin Theatre – 2014), Chicago (Playhouse theatre – 2013), Oliver (MPA – 2012 ), Love off the shelf (Dolphin Theatre – 2011). She’s also written several original musicals: Oriental Dreams (2016); Brighter Future Musical III (2010); Hosea.The Musical (2008) Fiona holds a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Accounting) from the University of Auckland. She also has a ABRSM Diploma in piano, Grade 6 in violin and currently works as a Marketing Executive for Tower Insurance.

Angela is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne where she completed a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts, Theatre Production, and has recently completed a Masters of Arts, Arts Management at Whitecliffe College of the Arts. She has a twenty five year career in the arts, working across theatre, film, music and visual arts. As a stage manager she specialises in non-text based, imaged based, devised work, and as a production and event manager she specialises in site specific theatre performances and large scale events. She has produced and toured work nationally and internationally.

Tim has been a contributor to Theatrescenes for a number of years now in collaboration with his ‘first wife’ Sharu. Tim is an engineer by trade and attempts to present a slightly alternate audience members perspective in his reviews.
Tim co-directed and co-wrote Manpreet’s Spicy Emporium, Life Coach and Business Mentor Pvt Ltd PhD (with Aman Bajaj) in 2017, and co-wrote, The Marriage Bureau (2015) and Footprints to New Zealand (2014) with Sharu. All three plays reached the Short + Sweet Gala Finals.

Alyssa Medel is a filmmaker and historian armed with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Screen Production and History. An emerging creative working in both screen and theatre, she is inspired by the power of storytelling to move the heart and bring communities together. A massive lover of film and theatre, she is passionate about the relationship between visual storytelling and its power to centre voices that are normally marginalised. She has produced a number of short films throughout her tertiary years, and is currently delving into theatre production and freelance photography. Outside of working behind the scenes, she is also an undercover-poet and actress having trained and attended workshops by Massive Theatre Company and The Actors Program.

Dominika Marcisz (alias Meeka), has over 15 years experience emersed in the multimedia, online and animation industry. She is a qualified designer and animator and understands the aesthetics of creating whether in online, broadcasting, film, or in print. Dominika was born in Poland, moved to South Africa when she was 11 years old and is now living in New Zealand.
She uses her skills to create a fun and playful approach to dealing with difficult topics, such as anxiety, depression and wellness in society.
Dominika’s passion is wellbeing. Her business motto “Creativity is wellness and wellness leads to creativity”.
Her favourite clients include organisations with a strong slant to sustainability and contribution to New Zealand society like DRIVE (Counties Manukau Mental Health and Recovery Consumer Network), Mohawk Media, Drug Testing Foundation, Gender Equal NZ and New Zealand Green Building Council.
She has also been involved in the local arts community and has been awarded the Art Venture Award for her work in the sector.

John Rata is a Filipino Writer, Director and graduate of Unitec’s Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts degree. He has since worked in various management and assistant roles in film & Theatre, from NZFC funded short films to the Pop-Up Globe. In 2016 he premiered his first play, The Ball Date, at Te Pou Theatre and has recently finished a writing mentorship with Script to Screen under their South Shorts initiative. John is also the Assistant Producer and Photographer for Proudly Asian Theatre’s successful Fresh off the Page programme, which hosts play readings showcasing exciting local Asian talent.

Rika is a 25 year old youth worker from Waiuku. Growing up in a multicultural family, Rika has always had a passion for bringing together people from different walks of life and celebrating diversity within communities. She is eager to educate herself in order to honour her son’s whakapapa in immersing him in not only his indigenous Malay heritage, but in Te Ao Māori, as well. Rika aspires to not only use taonga puoro for entertainment, but for healing purposes, too. It has been an honour for Rika to be mentored by Jerome Kavanagh through the Dominion Rd The Musical experience, and he has been an amazing tuakana for her on this journey.

MABINGO ALFDANIELS
African Percussionist, Mabingo Alfdaniels, Ph.D.
Dr. Alfdaniels Mabingo was born and raised in his ancestral village, Mbuukiro, in central Uganda, East Africa. He first made contact with indigenous music and dance as a child in community performances in the village. Currently, Mabingo is working as a Professional Teaching Fellow and Research Assistant in the Dance Studies Program at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Holding a Ph.D. in Dance Studies from the University of Auckland, his research and teaching interests cover pedagogies of African dances, intercultural dance education, community dance, and professional teaching identities in dance. In 2018, Mabingo’s Ph.D. thesis was selected to be on the Dean’s list for its outstanding academic quality and acumen. He has conducted research on numerous topics in dance and his scholarly works have been published in the journal of dance education, research in dance education journal, journal of Black studies, journal of physical education, recreation, and dance, and curriculum journal, among others. An alumni of the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship at New York University in the U.S., Mabingo has performed and taught African dances and other dance subjects in the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and several countries in Africa. His other exceptional awards include: Fulbright Junior Staff Development Fellowship (2011); E. George Payne award for outstanding graduate academic excellence and leadership (2013); and the University of Auckland doctoral fellowship (2014). Outside academia, Mabingo performs as a percussionist for music bands, which include: New Telepathics, Ijebu Pleasure Club, Strangers in a Strange band, and UnChained-XL, all based in Auckland, New Zealand. He brings this wealth of experience, aroha, passion and expertise to Dominion Rd The Musical.

Basant Madhur is a widely acknowledged tabla player and a much-respected artiste in the arena of Indian Classical Music. On account of his versatility and pleasing disposition, he is the most sought & creative artist in the realm of Indian classical music in New Zealand and Australasia as a whole.
Born into a family of musicians, he took early training from his elder brother Deepak Madhur and received expert guidance from Punjab Gharana tabla maestro, the late Pt. Pawan Kumar Verma. During his college period, he received numerous awards at state, zonal & national level youth festivals. At the same time, All India Radio & Television approved him as a performing artist at AIR & television in Shimla.
Madhur moved to New Zealand in 2002 and established the “Sargam School of Indian Music.” By 2006, he had trained more than 300 students- some of which at a very high level. In 2008 he received the Award of Appreciation for his contribution to the field of music by GOPIO (Global organization of People of Indian Origin New Zealand).
Basant has had the honor of accompanying some of the stalwarts of Indian Classical Music such as Grammy winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in New Zealand
and USA, Pt. Ronu Majumdar in New Zealand & Australia, Pt. Rakesh Chaurasia, saxophone genius Dr. Kadri Gopalnath and mridangam player Patri Satish Kumar to name a few. He has also collaborated with several western musicians such as John Ellis, Luke Hurley, Murray McNabb, Frank Gibson Jr., Jon sanders and Prosad Freeman in fusion music. Other then being a regular feature in many music festivals in New Zealand, Basant is known to perform in India, Australia and USA on other occasions.

ANITA KANG
Anita was born and raised in Taiwan until she moved to New Zealand just before she turned 13. Her love for music and performing arts was evident at a young age; Anita started to learn the piano when she was 5 and picked up more instruments like the erhu, flute, violin, guitar, saxophone and drums as she grew up. Her main instrument is the Chinese fiddle – Erhu, which she started learning from the age of 9 and has been playing ever since. Anita has performed at a variety of occasions as a professional Erhu artist either with other musicians or by herself, and has been involved in a few music productions both as a singer and an actress. She has also composed various background music tracks for her friends who work in the film industry. Anita holds a Bachelor of Music (Composition), a Master of Teaching (Primary) from the University of Auckland and is currently working as a full-time classroom teacher at a primary school in East Auckland.

BRADY PEETI
Brady joins the cast just off a successful career… In admin. A singer from a young age, Brady knows a thing or two about the ever so effervescent term “stage presence”. His most recent credits include playing Ja’far in Dionysis’ New Zealand premier of Twisted, The Government in The Loose Dick Kiddies Show which attended the Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin Fringe Festivals and James “Thunder” Early in the Manukau Performing Arts production of Dreamgirls.
Inclusive to this he has recorded an album that is set to be released later this year. It includes his single “It’s Raining” which went to the top of the Blues Charts earlier this year.
Brady’s credits include The Wizard Of Otahuhu, Mirror Mirror and Larger Than Life.
He has worked on Dominion Road: The Musical since the workshops in 2016 in the role of Stevie.
Brady looks forward to working on such a brilliant piece of theatre and gives his thanks to Sharu, Borni, Jun Bin and Renee for their pure creative genius and amazing dumplings.

A graduate of the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA), classically trained in singing for over a decade. She is currently involved in singing and composing for three different bands, imbued with a ceaseless desire to create music. Her passion for acting lead her to perform at the Q Theatre as part of the Legacy Project and also the short film ‘Value’ produced by Gainsborough Films Ltd. She composes and sings jingles and voices adverts for NZME. radio stations.
Constantly on the hunt for unique projects, she was drawn to audition for Dominion Road the Musical as it was set to portray an authentic fresh voice of New Zealand, with the complex and challenging role of Geeta intriguing her. She is thrilled and humbled to be part of such a strong talented team of creatives and can’t wait to bring Dominion Road to life.

Mustaq Missouri was first introduced to theatre when he was in high school. He played a role in Peter Shaffer’s Royal Hunt of the Sun. During the next three years he acted in Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs, Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Rex, Georg Buckner’s Woyzeck and Joe Orton’s Loot.
In Shanghai, his previous home base, Mustaq renewed his love for the stage. He acted in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear and Twelfth Night, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Catastrophe, Henrik Ibsen’s The Master Builder, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, Shelagh Stephenson’s The Memory of Water, Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle, Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound, Frank McGuiness’s Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, Noel Coward’s Hay Fever. Edgar Allan Poe’s Masque’rade, Macabre Tales from Poe and Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Mustaq arrived in New Zealand in March 2014 and in June of that year made his debut theatrical performance in Prayas’s production of Charandas Chor – The Honest Thief. He was also one of the actors in a reading of Ahi Karunaharan’s play Tea, which was conducted under the guidance of the Auckland Theatre Company. He also acted in two short plays in the 2014 Short and Sweet Festival, The Possethsion and Crossbow Cat; the latter garnering both the Judge’s and People’s Choice Awards, with the addition of The Best Actor Award going to him.
Mustaq also took part in the 2015 Summer Shakespeare season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where he played the role of Egeus, under the direction of Michael Hurst. After which he acted in Chekhov Gone Wilde, a production by Theatrewhack. Following that he was in The Mourning After, the first Sri Lankan play in New Zealand, a co-production between Prayas and Agaram and written by Ahi Karunaharan.
He was also inThe Lesson, an absurdist play by Eugene Ionesco, under the direction of Matt Baker. In March 2016 he was in The Summer Shakespeare production of The Tempest at The Pop Up Globe, which was directed by Ben Henson. His most recent production was in Prayas’s production of Love n Stuff, where he played the lead role of Mansoor.
