DOMINION ROAD – THE MUSICAL
Using Dominion Road as the backdrop for the fictional story, Dominion Rd the Musical is the case where art mimics life. Written by Renee Liang and Jun Bin Lee, the main storyline centres around business owners and residents of Dominion Road. Presented by Sharu Loves Hats and directed by Borni Te Rongopai Tukiwaho, Dominion Rd the Musical celebrates Auckland’s diversity.

The original jack-of-all-trades with her huge voice, personality and wicked sense of humour, Jackie spent 10 years touring and recording with When The Cat’s Been Spayed, where she earned a reputation for wearing plastic fruit on her head – but we can assure you it was only ever flowers and the odd vegetable.
Her stage appearances include star turns in Mamma Mia, Anything Goes, Sweet Charity, Spelling Bee, A Christmas Carol, Mum’s The Word, The Underwatermelonman, Porgy and Bess, and Joseph.
Jackie currently belts out tunes with The Lady Killers (with Tina Cross and Suzanne Lynch), High Wide and Handsome (with Rikki Morris and Chet O’Connell) and is a member of the gospel choir Jubilation (‘Shout and Never Get Tired’ Ode Records). She’s also sung with Annie Crummer, Dave Dobbyn, that famous band the NZSO and currently tiki tours with the annual Kids for Kids concert shows.
Jackie’s done lots of T.V over the years; presenting documentaries, judging NZ Idol and Showcase, acting in sketch comedy (The Semesis, Skitz), and annual appearances at Coca Cola Xmas in the Park, since Santa was a brunette.

A graduate of the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA), classically trained in singing for over a decade. She is currently involved in singing and composing for three different bands, imbued with a ceaseless desire to create music. Her passion for acting lead her to perform at the Q Theatre as part of the Legacy Project and also the short film ‘Value’ produced by Gainsborough Films Ltd. She composes and sings jingles and voices adverts for NZME. radio stations.
Constantly on the hunt for unique projects, she was drawn to audition for Dominion Road the Musical as it was set to portray an authentic fresh voice of New Zealand, with the complex and challenging role of Geeta intriguing her. She is thrilled and humbled to be part of such a strong talented team of creatives and can’t wait to bring Dominion Road to life.

Mustaq Missouri was first introduced to theatre when he was in high school. He played a role in Peter Shaffer’s Royal Hunt of the Sun. During the next three years he acted in Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs, Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Rex, Georg Buckner’s Woyzeck and Joe Orton’s Loot.
In Shanghai, his previous home base, Mustaq renewed his love for the stage. He acted in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear and Twelfth Night, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Catastrophe, Henrik Ibsen’s The Master Builder, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, Shelagh Stephenson’s The Memory of Water, Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle, Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound, Frank McGuiness’s Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, Noel Coward’s Hay Fever. Edgar Allan Poe’s Masque’rade, Macabre Tales from Poe and Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Mustaq arrived in New Zealand in March 2014 and in June of that year made his debut theatrical performance in Prayas’s production of Charandas Chor – The Honest Thief. He was also one of the actors in a reading of Ahi Karunaharan’s play Tea, which was conducted under the guidance of the Auckland Theatre Company. He also acted in two short plays in the 2014 Short and Sweet Festival, The Possethsion and Crossbow Cat; the latter garnering both the Judge’s and People’s Choice Awards, with the addition of The Best Actor Award going to him.
Mustaq also took part in the 2015 Summer Shakespeare season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where he played the role of Egeus, under the direction of Michael Hurst. After which he acted in Chekhov Gone Wilde, a production by Theatrewhack. Following that he was in The Mourning After, the first Sri Lankan play in New Zealand, a co-production between Prayas and Agaram and written by Ahi Karunaharan.
He was also inThe Lesson, an absurdist play by Eugene Ionesco, under the direction of Matt Baker. In March 2016 he was in The Summer Shakespeare production of The Tempest at The Pop Up Globe, which was directed by Ben Henson. His most recent production was in Prayas’s production of Love n Stuff, where he played the lead role of Mansoor.

Brady joins the cast just off a successful career… In admin. A singer from a young age, Brady knows a thing or two about the ever so effervescent term “stage presence”. His most recent credits include playing Ja’far in Dionysis’ New Zealand premier of Twisted, The Government in The Loose Dick Kiddies Show which attended the Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin Fringe Festivals and James “Thunder” Early in the Manukau Performing Arts production of Dreamgirls.
Inclusive to this he has recorded an album that is set to be released later this year. It includes his single “It’s Raining” which went to the top of the Blues Charts earlier this year.
Brady looks forward to working on such a brilliant piece of theatre and gives his thanks to Sharu, Borni, Jun Bin and Renee for their pure creative genius and amazing dumplings.

Benjamin Teh moved to New Zealand when he was sixteen from Singapore, for a more varied education. He has since ventured into different creative avenues; such as actor, director, playwright and screenwriter. He has since graduated from the University of Auckland with a Masters in Screenwriting. His short film ‘Just Pretending’ won Best International Film at the 2010 Urban Mediamakers Film Festival in Duluth, Georgia; and he won Playmarket’s Asian Ink competition with his script ‘Let’s Save The Universe!’ Benjamin has toured several theatre shows around New Zealand, some of them with Renee Liang: The Bone Feeder, The First Asian AB, Bubblelands; and some with other companies: Ensemble Impact’s Asian Invasion. He has also been involved in TV shows like Passion In Paradise and Ash vs Evil Dead.
He has been cast in web series like Project J, Reset, Friday Night Bites and Group. He regularly collaborates with screen creative bodies like Angle3 Productions and HaynesOwFilms and Girl Viking Productions.
Benjamin is a proud member of Actors Equity NZ, is represented by Trio Arts, and is a big fan of failing forward.

A performer, facilitator, producer and director (South Seas Film and Television School, Dip, On Screen Acting and Unitec Bachelors in Performing and Screen Arts). Borni is also a core whanau member of Te Pou Theatre and is an Equity NZ board member. He co-created The Hobson Street Theatre Company a performance company for those struggling with homelessness and/or related issues. Alongside New Zealand Mental Health Foundation and Mind and Body he created the ATAWHAI Festival and alongside Body Positive and Positive Women created the PUAWAI Festival, engaging with members of these communities under the tikānga Māori framework aimed at awareness, de-stigmatization and self-empowerment through story telling with dignity. Borni directed Joanna St Jayne’s ‘People Like Us’ (2015), a musical based on the real life life story of a Trans woman and the trans community and ‘7 Deadly Monologues’ by Benjamin Teh, and the successful nationwide tour of Under The Same Moon, Renee Liang’s one woman show about immigration.

She writes in English but often includes her Cantonese’home dialect’. In addition to writing blogging and arts journalism, Renee’s produced and directed theatre works and taught creative writing and organised community-based arts initiatives. She organises community arts events such as New Kiwi Women Write, a writing workshop series for migrant women in association with Auckland Council. She’s a regular contributor to The Big Idea. She’s written, produced and nationally toured: Under The Same Moon (2015), finalist, SWANZ Best Play Awards (2015) Bubblelands (2015) The Quiet Room (2015), Adam Play Award shortlist 2013, teen section, Playmarket’s Plays For The Young winner (2014), SWANZ Best Play awards finalist (2016) The First Asian AB(2012) The Bone Feeder(2010) Lantern(2008). Jun Bin Lee, Malaysian Chinese who moved to New Zealand 12 years ago, is a musician, composer, short film director, and an engineer. He founded Performing Arts Workshop (now known as Ai Studio), which has produced a number of original musicals within the Asian migrant community. These include “Ai” the Musical (2013 & 2015) and How She Flew To The Moon (2012), as well as four Brighter Future musicals. His works are mostly in English and Mandarin, but has also produced works in Malay, Hindi and French. His most recent production which he directed and wrote was Prodigal Son, The Musical which was presented as part of the 2017 Auckland Fringe Festival at The Spreading Tree, a creative space in Mt Eden.
Jun Bin has composed and directed “Ai the musical”, a romantic comedy musical loosely based on his own relationship. The musical was presented at Auckland Fringe Festival 2013, and has won second runner up for “People choice award”. This piece was reproduced in Musgrove Studio at Auckland University in 2015.
He has also written and composed 10 minute musicals – “The Adventure of Kazu and Kengo” and “Karaoke Heaven”, both won “People choice awards” at Short and Sweet Song Festival in 2013 and 2014. Jun Bin’s musical short film “The Tour” about a group of Asian tourists in Rotorua, has won “People Choice Award” & “Highly recommended Award” at the Rotorua’s Creation Festival short film competition. Lavina Williams, a former member of the top NZ 90s Girl group MaVelle, toured the world from age 16-22. They recorded two RnB/Soul albums, “Spoken To” and “Ma’V’Elle, and supported top female singers such as Tina Turner, Macy Grey, Boney M and B*witched. Recorded a Gospel album titled “Everything”, which was released in New Zealand and Australia in English and Te Reo Maori. Williams is New Zealand born of Samoan and Fijian descent, oldest of super musical family (brother J.Williams and sister Emily Williams) . Joined the “The Lion King” in Australia as principal role, sassy and short-tempered hyena Shenzi, in Germany and Singapore and understudy for Queen Sarabi and Rafiki, the King’s loyal baboon. She entered Australian Idol, coming 8th place in 2006, then moved to Germany to write and produce music for the music competition show Pop Stars. Played Denna, Dream Girls (France) and lead role Motormouth Maybelle “Hairspray”, Skycity Theatre (2014).

Taiaroa trained at the New Zealand School of Dance, graduating in 1984 with a Dip. Dance. He has performed with many of NZ’s major dance companies both at home and abroad, including The Royal New Zealand Ballet, Douglas Wright, Michael Parmenter’s Commotion Dance Company, Black Grace, Orotokare and Atamira Dance Company.
In 2010, Tai was awarded the Te Tohu Toi Ke – Making A Difference Award from Te Waka Toi for his contribution to Maori Contemporary Dance. He is the first dancer and the fifth recipient of this award. Later that year he was honoured in the Tempo Dance Festival’s ‘Honouring a Dancer’, where the industry, along with close friends and family, celebrated Tai’s long outstanding successful career in the New Zealand dance community.
In 2011 Tai accepted the Koowhiti Lifetime Achievement Award outlining him as one of Aotearoa’s outstanding Maori Dancers and Choreographers.
Tai has choreographed for Brancott Estate World of Wearable Arts Awards, Wellington; Christmas in the Park, Auckland and choreographed and an associated director for NZ Opera. Tai is also a part-time teaching at the UNITEC Bachelor of Performing Screen Arts, and has taught at NZSD and private dance schools

Fiona was born in Malaysia, but has lived in New Zealand since she was 16. It was in New Zealand that she discovered her love for music, and has since been involved with various musical productions in the local scene as a music director, as well as written several original musicals. Having grown up part of her life in Malaysia, she is well versed in Malay and English. Fiona has music directed several shows in Auckland: Ruthless (Dolphin Theatre – 2014), Chicago (Playhouse theatre – 2013), Oliver (MPA – 2012 ), Love off the shelf (Dolphin Theatre – 2011). She’s also written several original musicals: Oriental Dreams (2016); Brighter Future Musical III (2010); Hosea.The Musical (2008) Fiona holds a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Accounting) from the University of Auckland. She also has a ABRSM Diploma in piano, Grade 6 in violin and currently works as a Marketing Executive for Tower Insurance.

John Parker is an award winning set designer and ceramic artist. He is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (Geneva).
He has a long history of designing for Auckland Theatre Company, including Peer Gynt, Polo, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Wife Who Spoke Japanese in Her Sleep, Doubt, Equus, Caligula, The Rocky Horror Show, Waiting For Godot, Rosencrantz and Guildernstein Are Dead, Into The Woods and The Glass Menagerie.
Designs for other companies include Faust, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, , Il Trovatore, Chess, Romeo and Juliet, Titus Andronicus, Assassins, Waiora, The Marriage of Figaro, Evita and Trash to Fashion.
John has also designed Bendon’s Next To Nothing, Bellsouth Pharaohs, Precious Legacy and Peru: Gold and Sacrifice for the Auckland Museum.
He was awarded a Waitakere City Millennium Medal for Services to the Community. In 2010 John was made an Arts Laureate by The Art’s Foundation of NZ.

Tanya is a creative organiser who likes to help push out the potential brilliance of young and old practitioners in the performing arts industry. Her creativity can be found in NZ’s longest running Pacific performing arts group Pacific Underground (PU). There she also led the Christchurch Pacific Arts Festival for 10 years. She then lent her organising skills to others at Auckland’s Pasifika, Diwali and Lantern Festivals, Auckland Theatre Company, Mangere Arts Centre and most recently at the Auckland Arts Festival to name a few. A Christchurch native, Tanya is a proud one-eyed Samoan Cantabrian who enjoys engaging with people of all nations in the arts, and loves working in shows for the community, by the community.

Kit has been involved in the musical theatre industry for several years, as a performer, director and producer. Kit studied a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland and currently works in Marketing and Development. Kit’s has worked for an array of arts organisations including the James Wallace Arts Trust and Q Theatre. Kit’s performance credits include: Footloose, Miss Saigon, Chess, Songs for a New World & Hair the Musical. More recently, Kit was involved producing shows such as Hungover and Benedict Cumberbatch Must Die at the Basement Theatre.His most recent involvement in theatre was directing Our Town at the Playhouse Theatre. Kit is excited to be working on the social media for Dominion Road The Musical and being involved in telling compelling stories about our home through the medium of music.

Well liked technician from Auckland, Sam Mence is known for his attention to detail, professionalism, and love of live performance. He has a strong background in all things electrical, as well as extensive experience in most aspects of theatrical productions which sees a comprehensive complement of production credits to his name across a variety of key production roles. Sam’s strength as a designer has seen him designing for a range of different shows, including the operatic La Traviata at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House, An Ideal Husband at The Rose Centre, a musical version of The Importance of Being Earnest in Q Loft, the Arts On Tour season of Under The Same Moon, and the New Zealand Premiere of Dogfight with AMT for which he won the 2015 NAPTA for Best Sound Design. His love for musical theatre, combined with his strong working relationship with Borni Te Rongopai Tukiwaho and Renee Liang, see him excited to be offering his professional services for Dominion Rd The Musical Development Season.

Wai is currently an Honours student at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. She shares the Creative Community Engager role with Gemishka for Dominion Rd The Musical. Outside this production team, she is part of the editorial team and liaison for the school’s magazine Elamite and the writer and liaison for student community Studio International. Getting involved with public art events have always excited her, giving her great satisfaction when it all comes together. She was part of WHAU Arts Festival in 2015 with Copyleft and exhibited in Studio One Toi Tu with I.O.W.A. in the same year. Wai also worked alongside the team of Jun Kitazawa for his public art event Unreal City Estate. She has also been volunteering at Artspace and helped putting up exhibitions since 2015.

Since graduating from the University of Auckland, Gemishka has been working in the media industry, as a freelance videographer, and avid social butterfly. She has co-created a webseries called Brown Noize of breaking the media status quo, have done videos and photography for TAPAC during their culture clash programme last year. She is excited to be part of a great team of creatives putting together a great show about new representations in New Zealand today. As a creative community engager she is reaching out to people to ensure their voices are recognised.
